| POSITION SUMMARY: |
The Director of Emergency Services is responsible for the overall management and implementation of the Disaster, Armed Forces and International Services programs at the American Red Cross, Santa Barbara County Chapter. This position is also responsible for ensuring involvement of volunteers and community members as well as staff in the planning and actions of the department, and functions as a member of the senior management team. |
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides effective management of Emergency Services Specialist, other ES staff and volunteers.
- Collaborates with Safety & Preparedness department, ensuring successful implementation of trainings and Community Disaster Education.
- In partnership with volunteer leadership, oversees Disaster Committee and functional areas such as Logistics, Disaster Health Services and DSHR.
- Effectively manages external relations with public, government, and private sector leadership as they relate to Emergency Services.
- Ensures development, implementation, approval of, and compliance with Chapter and National Disaster Plans.
- Supports volunteer recruitment, retention and mobilization.
- Assumes leadership of major local disasters.
- Effectively represents the Chapter to the community, including making presentations on Disaster Relief.
- As a member of the Chapter’s management team, supports Chapter-wide strategies and other decision-making activities.
- Ensures compliance with regulations and reporting to the Regional Chapter and National Headquarters.
- Act within the regional structure to help with planning as well as provide support, and response assistance as needed.
- Manages Emergency Services funds and client benefit distributions, with clear understanding of audit and Chapter Policy & Procedure requirements.
- Serves as AmeriCorps Site Host.
- Supervises AmeriCorps members (2)

- Performs other duties as assigned by the CEO, and works in conjunction with other departments to support Chapter activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Education and/or Experience – Bachelors Degree in Social Work or other related field and a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience.
- Language Skills – Ability to read and speak English fluently. Ability to write clear correspondences, reports and memos, and follow template formats. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, as well as in group situations, to customers, clients, volunteers and other employees of the organization. Bilingual (Spanish) ability preferred.
- Mathetmatical Skills - Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
- Computer Skills – To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Outlook Internet software; Excel (basic) and MS Word. Also must be capable of working with required interactive forms supplied by National Headquarters.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations – Must have a current California Drivers License, and will be required to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification through the American Red Cross.
- Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use his/her hands, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Safety and Security - Observes safety and security procedures, determines appropriate action beyond guidelines, reports potentially unsafe conditions, and uses equipment and materials properly.
